CINCINNATI -- Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick has a small fracture on his right hand and expects to be out of practice for 2-3 weeks, he told reporters Tuesday.

Kirkpatrick did not say how the injury occurred, only that it was a "freak accident." Bengals coach Marvin Lewis declined to give an update, saying only that Kirkpatrick would return to practice when healthy and that he did not have a timetable.

The Bengals are holding voluntary OTAs and players are not required to be at practice until June 13, the start of mandatory minicamp.

Kirkpatrick wasn't in uniform during the Bengals' first practice of OTAs. He stood in the back and watched practice while wearing what appeared to be a soft cast on his right hand/wrist.

However, he remained an active participant, standing at the back of the field and running through some of the drills by himself. He helped coach up several of the younger players during practice, including William Jackson III, the Bengals 2016 first-round pick who missed all of last season with an injury.

"He's a rookie," Kirkpatrick said of Jackson. "I told him that yesterday. He hasn't been through games. He hasn't played a down, he hasn't gone through camp. I told him, 'You're still a rookie, you're just a little advanced.'

He added: "We've got Adam [Jones], Vontaze [Burfict], we still have other guys (to help with the rookies). Right now I'm not doing anything, so I'm just kind of freelancing. Those guys are trying to get mental reps. That was just my job today."
