The only thing standing between athlete
Jordan Lucas (New Rochelle, N.Y./Worcester Academy) and a handful of Division I scholarship offers were his grades. At least that's what one college assistant coach said earlier this week. The list of schools that showed interest in Lucas during his senior year in high school is a lengthy one."Rutgers, UConn, BC, Penn State, Stony Brook, New Hampshire, Villanova, Temple, Towson, Maryland before Edsall [first-year coach Randy Esall], Syracuse and Western Michigan," Lucas recalled. "I didn't get any offers because I just couldn't qualify."He said he's beginning to turn things around academically. He took night classes during his senior year, and recently began a year of prep school at Worcester (Mass.) Academy. He said he expects offers to start arriving in November, after his first trimester."[Academically] things will change quickly," Lucas said. "I'm becoming a disciplined young man as far as my work. "Boston College suggested I go to prep school, and it was New Hampshire that recommended Worcester Academy. I want to improve my grades and see what I can get [for offers]."Lucas played running back in high school, but will be used as a defensive back and receiver at Worcester Academy, a school with at least a handful of Division I recruits.Lucas will take an unofficial visit to Penn State to watch the Nittany Lions play Alabama this weekend. One of his teammates, three-star receiver
Canaan Severin (Marlborough, Mass./Worcester Academy), will join him on the trip.Lucas said he'd also like to take unofficial visits to Rutgers and Connecticut."A lot of schools look at me as an athlete, but most of them want me to play somewhere in the defensive backfield," he said. "Penn State has been expressing interest, it's just a matter of getting my grades up."If Boston College came through with an offer I would probably take a trip there, but right now I have no clue about official visits because I have no offers."
