Linebacker Tim Joy (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) has been a lifelong Boston College fan, so he was filled with nervous energy last month when the BC coaches told him a decision about a scholarship offer would be made after they took a look at him during their camp. When Joy arrived, the BC staff saw more than it expected. He had gained 20 pounds of good weight since basketball season ended and was measured at 6-foot-2 and 215 pounds.Joy was offered a scholarship -- and quickly accepted -- even though he suffered a hamstring injury during his only day at camp and was unable to participate in the showcase portion of the event."One of the biggest things they said is how much I've improved at everything since last year [at BC's camp]," Joy said before he helped his Chelmsford team win the Northeast 7v7 Tournament on Saturday. "I ran a 4.9 40 at BC last year, and then I ran a 4.7 in the rain this year even with the added weight."Connecticut, Duke and Maryland were among the other schools that showed serious interest in Joy, but he said BC and UConn were the two main schools in the picture. He had planned to attend a UConn camp the Monday after BC offered, but made his decision before then."All the other schools said they wanted to see my first few games next year," Joy said. "Plus, BC has always been my favorite school. When I was growing up I would always go to one game a season."BC currently has 13 commitments, two of whom are from Massachusetts: Joy and defensive back Donovan Henry (Sharon, Mass./Catholic Memorial).Joy said he's been told he will likely redshirt his first season at BC, but hasn't been told whether he'll play inside or outside linebacker."They told me they're not sure yet if it'll be outside or inside," Joy said. "Whatever is the best fit. I'll play wherever I can to get on the field and help the team."
