When offensive lineman
John Ferranto (Burlington, N.J./Burlington Township) showed up for a North Carolina football camp in mid-June, he didn't know much about the North Carolina football program and the North Carolina coaches didn't know much about him."Before the camp they weren't recruiting me very hard," Ferranto said. The getting-to-know-you period resulted in a marriage, however, as Ferranto received a scholarship offer a couple of days after the camp and committed to the Tar Heels on July 3. "Everything felt right," Ferranto said. "I connected with the coaches. It has the best blend of football and academics."Ferranto had offers from Temple and Tulane before the North Carolina camp, and received an offer from Connecticut in late June. He has been used primarily as a defensive end in high school, but was recruited as an offensive tackle. He said he'll play offense during his senior season this fall.Ferranto (6-foot-6, 275 pounds) didn't expect to receive an offer from North Carolina before his senior season began."They came to my high school on the last day of the spring evaluation period," he said. "I guess a couple other coaches in the area had mentioned me. They told me they'd like to take a look at me during their camp."After camp I guess they didn't have enough film of me because they told me to send more film after our first scrimmage. They filmed every rep I had at camp though, and a couple days later they told me they didn't see any reason why they couldn't make an offer."I committed after I visited the school with my parents [July 2-3]. I felt like if I dragged things out I would be wasting people's time."The fact he's a long snapper also made Ferranto attractive.Ferranto said he expects to be redshirted during his first season."They told me they try to redshirt their offensive linemen," he said. "They said it's a position that's a tough transition from high school to college."
