Source: Celtics renounce rights to 2013 pick Colton Iverson

The Boston Celtics have renounced their rights to 2013 second-round draft pick Colton Iverson, a league source told ESPN.

The 27-year-old Iverson, selected after the Celtics purchased the No. 53 pick from the Indiana Pacers, never signed with Boston and spent the past three years as an overseas stash, playing in Turkey and Spain.

The 7-foot Iverson returned stateside to join Boston's summer league entry twice, but a crowded roster never gave him much of a chance to muscle his way to a roster spot. He settled for lucrative overseas offers and has played well enough that he might intrigue an NBA team with a thin frontcourt and roster space. By renouncing his rights, the Celtics are giving him a chance to land a camp invite elsewhere.

Working against Iverson: He's only four months younger than Celtics All-Star point guard Isaiah Thomas and faces an uphill battle because of his age and the perception of what his ceiling might be at this stage of his career.

With a chiseled frame and a relentless motor, Iverson endeared himself to Boston brass before the 2013 draft, particularly with his efforts in the team's three-minute sprint drill during a pre-draft visit. He posted one of the best numbers for big men, sitting high in the team's unofficial records for big men with the likes of Joakim Noah.

The Celtics already have 19 players under contract for the 2016-17 season, including 16 guaranteed deals. The team will need to make a move in order to avoid eating money to get down to the regular-season limit of 15 players.

The Boston Globe first reported Iverson's rights were being renounced.
