Offensive lineman
Nico Siragusa (Chula Vista, Calif./Mater Dei) has seen his stock soar in recent months and is now among the most heavily recruited lineman in the state. Siragusa is a classic late-bloomer who didn't play his first year of football until his junior season. He showed up as a complete unknown at the Nike SPARQ combine in Long Beach but after measuring out at 6-foot-5, 310 pounds, throwing the power ball 42 feet and compiling the top SPARQ rating for all offensive linemen, he earned an invite to the Nike camp at USC the following day."Man, that was a crazy experience," Siragusa said. "There were so many people at the combine and then at the Nike camp the next day, the talent was sick. I remember just hoping to get in to the camp at SC and then competing pretty well and getting a shout out in a post camp article. It was a great experience for me and I learned a lot."San Jose State was first to offer the lineman in May and soon Washington State, Colorado and San Diego State followed suit. Siragusa is now well over the double digit mark and is beginning to work on his visits."I'm going to San Diego State (Dec. 9)," Siragusa said. "We have a bye next weekend and I'm looking to visit either Colorado, Fresno State or Washington State, I'm still trying to figure out which one. It's hard because there are so many schools I like that I want to visit right now and you can only pick five."I also want to visit Oregon and UCLA too. They haven't offered yet but both said they're waiting on my senior film. I'm putting it together right now and after our next game this weekend, I'll add that and then send it out. I think it looks pretty good so far but we'll see what the colleges say about it."
Two schools stand out for MaulhardtAfter a record breaking night last weekend, Camarillo (Calif.) receiver
Jake Maulhardt is hoping his performance on the field will pay off with more attention off of it.Maulhardt had an incredible performance over the weekend catching 28 balls for 347 yards and three touchdowns. The 28 catches were a new state record and interest is starting to pick up for the big 6-foot-6 receiver."My coach said a lot of schools are calling but San Diego State and Boise State are the most interested," Maulhardt said. "They were both showing a lot of interest before my game last week though so it's nothing new with them."I talked to both and they want me to set up an official visit. I have to take the SAT first though and I'm doing that this Saturday. Once I have a score recorded, I can set up some dates and I'm looking forward to doing that real soon here."Maulhardt caught 94 passes last season, so he's used to being the focal point of the offense and also getting a lot of attention from opposing defenses. Still after catching 28 passes last week, there's no doubt this week's opponent, Ventura (Calif.), will have half its team watching the receivers every move."Honestly I just want to get a win," Maulhardt said. "We're 1-2 right now and it was great catching all those passes last week but we still lost. If I go out and catch 30 balls this week, that's great but I just want to win a game."
