• ASU's gamble pays off

Arizona State gambled and won big over the weekend. With national power USC in town, the Sun Devils decided to use this an opportunity to bring in several of their top prospects in for official visits. This strategy has backfired on teams in the past. Using a big in-season game for a visit weekend can obviously create an electric atmosphere, but can also hurt if the host school ends up getting blown out.ASU had a dominant win on the field beating the Trojans 43-22 and it created a definite buzz with all the recruits on hand."I had a lot of fun, it was a great visit," Byron Marshall (San Jose, Calif./Valley Christian) said. "I've been up to ASU numerous times because my brother Cameron plays there but the game atmosphere made this my favorite visit. My brother played great and when he scored on that long touchdown run to open up the game, I knew he would play well."I spent a week at ASU during my spring break last year so I already felt like I had seen the campus and knew all about the academic programs. There really wasn't anything new for me to see and the only real difference for this visit was I got to spend the night there. Still it was a great experience and I was really glad to see the team get that big win and end the losing streak with USC."Despite the great atmosphere, Marshall said he was never tempted to commit and will take the rest of his visits before he pulls the trigger."I have Notre Dame set up for (Oct. 21) when they play USC and I have Oregon (Nov. 25) for the Civil War game against Oregon State," Marshall said. "I'm still trying to figure out my last two visits. I'm looking at a handful of schools including Cal, USC and Washington right now."Athlete D.J Foster (Scottsdale, Ariz./Saguaro) went in to his visit with ASU leading and the Sun Devils remain in a very good position. In fact Foster talked as if he was already a part of the team following the visit."The best part of the trip had to be getting that win against USC," Foster said. "ASU is the hometown school and I already feel like I know so much about the place. I know a lot of the players and Saguaro has kind of been a pipeline to ASU for the last few years. My coaches really like ASU a lot and I know they would love to see me stay local."It was still fun to experience the visit with other recruits and talk to them. The game atmosphere was incredible and we all had a great time. I was glad my mom could be there too and I know she learned a lot about the university. I'm still going to take my visits but ASU is at the top of my list right now."Foster will check out Nebraska (Oct. 7) and Oregon (Oct. 14). Washington is also heavily in the mix as well.Offensive lineman Cedrick Poutasi (Las Vegas/Desert Pines) said several things stood out about the visit."I loved the game environment, and the academic support the players receive there," Poutasi said. "The game was incredible, it was so much fun to be in that atmosphere. I didn't know about the history of the rivalry and how ASU hadn't beaten USC in 11 years and that just added to everything."I also really liked how the school really has the academics in order for the players. You have to try to fail basically and they put a lot of emphasis on making sure the athletes are staying on top in the classroom. I also got along great with the players and they all treated me like I was part of the family already. Toa Tuitea was my host, I just called him 'G' but he was great and showed me a great time for sure."Wide receiver Bryce Treggs (Bellflower, Calif./St. John Bosco), a Cal commit, went in to the visit just looking to have a good time but admitted the visit did make him think for a bit."The game was the high point for me," Treggs said. It was a crazy, wild atmosphere and I had a great time being a part of that. USC is obviously a well respected program and ASU hadn't beaten them in a while so it was cool to see it happen in person. It was funny, everyone was teasing Scott [Starr] and Jabari [Ruffin] since SC was getting smacked around a little but it was all in good fun."The coaches were cool too, they actively recruited me and said they didn't care that I was committed, they were going to come after me. I'll be honest, they gave me something to think about for sure but I'm still a Bear. I'm solid in my commitment and that's what these visits are for. I want to make sure I'm seeing everything out there so I can compare it with Cal. ASU was great but at the end of the day, I still feel Cal is the best place for me."
