Five things I learned this weekend: OL Murphy could play for some colleges right now
There is a lot of hype surrounding San Clemente (Calif.) four-star offensive linemen Kyle Murphy, but after watching his Tritons dismantle Carlsbad (Calif.) La Costa Canyon 58-7 on Friday, he more than lived up to his lofty reputation. Simply put, Murphy, ranked No. 26 in the ESPNU 150, is one of the most college ready offensive linemen you'll see at the high school level. He's 6-foot-7, 285 pounds and actually looks lean because of how athletic his frame is. He runs like a linebacker, plays with great toughness and has just the right amount of nastiness you have to have to play in the trenches. "I'm a perfectionist, I always think I can play better," Murphy said. "I'm more physical than last year but I can still work on my technique, just polishing up some things. It was fun though. I felt strong and as a team, we played really well."Halverson deserves some BCS love
In one of the biggest upsets in the West region, Portland (Ore.) Grant shocked Aloha (Ore.), the No. 1 team in the state, 51-27 Friday night. It also made me wonder why linebacker Daniel Halverson, Grant's best player, doesn't have more offers from top programs. Halverson had a great summer earning LB MVP at the Nike camp at Stanford over USC commit Scott Starr (Norco, Calif./Norco), Boise State commit Chris Santini (San Jose, Calif./Leeland) and elite junior prospect Michael Hutchings (Concord, Calif./De La Salle). He also had a solid week at The Opening playing against the nation's best, but Air Force and Portland State remain his only offers."I'm definitely sending this game tape out," Halverson said following the big win. "I had 12 tackles, a sack, caused a fumble and had a pick six. This was a huge win for us, playing the No. 1 team in the state, I knew everyone will be watching. If this doesn't help my recruitment, I don't know what will."Wilson looks like a different quarterback
San Clemente (Calif.) quarterback Travis Wilson had a very good junior season, throwing for over 2,300 yards and 12 touchdowns. In the Tritons' win Friday night, he looked much improved in every facet of the game and is beginning to fulfill his vast potential.Wilson has put on about 15 pounds in the last year and now is a gangly 6-6, 215 pounds. He has always been a good athlete for a tall quarterback and had several impressive runs against La Costa Canyon, including one where he hurdled over a defender in his best Sam McGuffie impression. The Utah commit threw for 157 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for two more scores in a very efficient night. "I felt great out there," Wilson said. "I'm stronger, quicker with my reads and my feet are a lot better in the pocket. "I learned a lot at the Elite 11 in the summer and I think it's paying off on the field." Browne looks like an elite signal caller
