• USC landing Chad Wheeler is smart move

Although it wasn't supposed to become official until Saturday, word has leaked that Santa Monica (Calif.) two-way lineman Chad Wheeler has decommitted from Arizona State and is now headed to USC, his childhood dream school. The interesting thing about the commitment is how it affects the Trojans' offensive line recruiting. With just 15 to 17 scholarships to give out this year, the decision to offer Wheeler may have come as a surprise to some, especially because the Trojans are doing very well with several highly-touted offensive lineman all over the region including Kyle Murphy (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente), Jordan Simmons (Encino, Calif./Crespi Carmelite) and Zach Banner (Lakewood, Wash./Lakes), among others. However, Wheeler plans to graduate early and enroll in the spring. What that means is his scholarship will not count as part of the total for the 2012 class. It obviously counts towards the total number of scholarships USC can have on their roster, but the Trojans have plenty of spots available due to transfers and players leaving the program. As for Wheeler as a prospect, he's definitely an intriguing kid. He played just one game on the offensive line as a junior but that's definitely the position most feel he projects best at. He's rated a three-star tackle and the No. 118 player in the state but that could definitely move up as Wheeler learns the position and becomes more comfortable playing on the offensive side of the ball. With his 6-foot-6, 260 pound frame and above-average athleticism, there's no doubt Wheeler has the physical tools to excel at the position and he gives them a great insurance plan if they come up short in landing a Murphy or Banner later in the year.
