Five things I learned this weekend: Carson WR Rogers is very good
There are some great receivers in the West region this year, but Carson (Calif.) standout Darreus Rogers showed he should be mentioned among the best of the best Friday night. Rogers was an all-state selection as a junior and torched a very good Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei team a week ago.On Friday, Rogers went up against a whole different level of athlete when the Colts took on Long Beach (Calif.) Poly, which features oe of the best secondaries in the region. It didn't matter as Rogers abused the Jackrabbits secondary to the tune of 10 catches for 192 yards and two touchdowns in the first half alone. "He's as good as any receiver I've ever coached against," longtime Jackrabbits DB coach Doc Moye said. "In 11 years as coach here, we've never once doubled a receiver, not once. Rogers killed us in the first half and at halftime, we decided we had to double him, he was just too good. I've seen all the top receivers in the state this year but Rogers is the best, he's an unbelievable talent."SoCal 2013 QB class looks very strong
Southern California is usually a hot bed for quarterbacks, but it has been a few years since a truly elite signal caller has come from the area. In the 2012 class, the top four quarterbacks in the state are all from Northern California but 2013 could be a different story.Hayden Rettig (Los Angeles, Calif./Cathedral) and Troy Williams (Harbor City, Calif./Narbonne) both had huge games on Friday and will no doubt be national prospects next spring. Rettig, who has been offered by Arizona, Arizona State, Boston College and Vanderbilt, completed 30 of 47 passes for 508 yards and six touchdowns in Cathedrals's 52-36 win over Wilmington (Calif.) Banning. Williams, who more of a dual threat signal caller, completed 20 of 28 passes for 256 yards and two touchdowns and also rushed for 87 yards and two more scores. Bowling Green, Nevada, SMU, Washington and Washington State have offered Williams.Santa Margarita (Calif.) coach Harry Welch could be the state's best
Saying any coach, other than legendary Concord (Calif.) De La Salle coach Bob Ladouceur, is the best coach in the Golden State is close to sacreligious. There's no doubt Coach 'Lad' is in a class of his own and the Spartans 151-game winning streak will never be touched.Saying that, it's amazing what Welch has been able to do in such a short time at Santa Margarita. Welch, who is the only coach in the state to win two state titles with two different programs, took over a program that went 3-7 overall and 0-4 in league in 2009, the year before he was named coach. Last season, his first with the Eagles, the program went 9-3, 4-1 in league and a berth in the CIF quarterfinals.Last Friday, playing against Las Flores (Calif.) Tesoro, the No. 5 ranked team in the country, the Eagles had a dominating 39-7 win and will definitely challenge for a State Bowl berth this season.Junior RB Martin no one-year wonder
