Running back
Chris Brown (Fresno, Calif./San Joaquin Memorial) took his first official visit of the year this past weekend to Oregon State and although the Beavers suffered a shocking upset to Sacramento State, Brown said he still had a great time in Corvallis."I really liked it a lot there," Brown said. "I know the game didn't go the way they wanted but I still really enjoyed myself and felt like I fit in well with the players and coaches. I'm looking for a school where I'll be comfortable on and off the field and I definitely felt that at Oregon State."I think the high point for me was just hanging with the coaches. We really connected well and Coach [Mike] Riley is a great guy and we hit it off well. I got along great with everyone there and I'm going to be staying in touch with Oregon State all season long for sure."Brown said he never gave any thought to making an early commitment and has more trips he knows he wants to take."I want to keep my options open right now," Brown said. "I'm going to visit Arizona (Sept. 16) when they host Stanford so that should be an exciting weekend. I'm also close on setting visit dates with Utah and Colorado. I'll take these visits for sure and then I'll figure out where my recruitment is at and if I'm ready to make a decision or not. Right now, I don't have a leader but I like these schools I'm visiting a lot."
Nice week for Washington StateWashington State was the first Pac-12 school to host multiple players for official visits this past weekend. The Cougars brought in five players and two have since committed. The Cougs landed commitments from a pair of offensive linemen in
Sam Flor (Bothell, Wash./O'Dea) and
Denzell Dotson (Glendale, Ariz./Cactus). Dotzon was a real coup choosing the Cougs over offers from Arizona State, Wyoming and Montana.Dotson will graduate early and enroll in Pullman in time for spring practice next year."I just fell in love with the place," Dotson said. "I really loved everything about the school and really bonded well with the players and coaches. I like the campus, the city, the academics and the opportunity to hopefully step in and play early. I just felt like it was a great fit for me and there was no point in delaying my decision."Also on the visit were receiver
Dalen Jones (Woodland, Calif.) who has already committed to the Cougs, athlete
Christian Tago (Palmdale, Calif./Highland) and offensive lineman
Eduardo Middleton (Oceanside, Calif.). Tago is a tremendous athlete who could play multiple positions in college, on both sides of the ball and Middleton is one the state's top guard prospects with offers from schools like Boise State, Oregon State, Utah, San Diego State, SMU and a few others.
More from Compton (Calif.) Dominguez vs. Encino (Calif.) CrespiDominguez has two talented corners in
Brandon Beaver and
Alphonso Marsh. Both players are highly coveted with double-digit scholarship offers. In their season opener against Crespi however, both players struggled.Beaver was lined up against Crespi's top receiver,
Chris Harper, and was beaten badly a few times. Beaver is a bit of 'tweener safety/corner prospect, according to his scouting report, and actually ran a 4.57-40 at The Opening but has good tools and athleticism to develop and is a scheme-versatile DB .Marsh is also regarded by some as a corner but is even less explosive than Beaver. He has a great frame and his coaches feel he'll move to safety in college but the concern there is whether he has the toughness and physical nature of a college safety. You never want to draw too many conclusions from one game but both Dons players have some serious question marks at the moment.Defensive end
Damion Turpin had a very solid game battling highly-touted Crespi offensive lineman
Jordan Simmons to a standstill. Neither player gave an inch against the other and despite giving up close to 100 pounds to Simmons, Turpin did a nice job getting off blocks and being around the football. He didn't push Simmons into the backfield by any stretch but showed why he has offers from just about the entire Pac-12 right now. Maybe the most impressive player for the Dons on this night was two-way lineman
Dejon Allen. He played both ways just about the entire game, lining up against Simmons at times and then also playing offensive guard. Allen committed to Arizona State as an offensive lineman and when he pulled, there were times Allen looked more like a big fullback rather than a 285-pound guard. The Sun Devils got a good one here.
