It took a little longer than expected, but Boise State picked up a commitment from standout defensive back Chanceller James (Spring Valley, Calif./Steele Canyon) Wednesday night.James had been a huge Broncos lean for the past several months and the feeling was he would likely commit on an unofficial visit to the campus two weeks ago. He loved the visit but said he wanted to talk with his family first and an announcement was then expected within days. Two weeks later, the Broncos have their man and their 14th commitment of the season."There was never a doubt I was going to commit to Boise State, it was just a matter of when for me," James said. "I loved the visit, love the coaching staff, the program and how successful they are, the attacking defense, basically everything about the school. I just wanted to be 100 percent sure so I talked with my parents and my pastor last week and now I feel really good about it."I kind of wanted to leave home and play out of state and Boise is a cool, college town. It's small and I'm really comfortable there. Coach (Chris) Petersen is awesome and a great guy too. My plan was to commit early to focus on my senior season and I guess I timed it perfectly since our season starts up this weekend."James chose the Broncos over Air Force, Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, New Mexico and San Diego State.Poutasi cancels official visitCedrick Poutasi (Las Vegas/Desert Pines) was scheduled to take an official visit to Oregon next weekend (Sept. 9), but that visit will now be re-scheduled."I decided to take the ACT that weekend," Poutasi said. "I really wanted to see Oregon and was looking forward to see if they were going to offer but I think school should come first. The ACT is a big deal and hopefully I'll be able to visit Oregon later in the year."Oregon along with UCLA and Utah appear to be on top for the offensive lineman.Brown set for visit No. 1Running back Chris Brown (Fresno, Calif./San Joaquin Memorial) is expected to take an official visit this weekend to Oregon State. Brown is one of the most heavily recruited backs in the West region with offers from Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, Colorado State, Fresno State, Missouri, New Mexico, Oregon State, Purdue, San Jose State, UNLV, Utah, Washington and Washington State.Shepard waiting on eligibilityESPNU 150 CB Tee Shepard transferred in the summer from Fresno (Calif.) Central to nearby Washington Union in order to play with his cousin Deonte Greenberry and also to be able to graduate early, because Central does not allow early graduates.Shepard was initially ruled ineligible to play this season but it now appears things have changed."I think he'll just sit out the first two games and then he can play," said Tony Perry, a mentor of Shepard and coach at Central. "He moved with his dad in to the district after living with his mom the last couple of years so he should be good. I think originally, they felt he was out of the area so he couldn't play."The section officials contacted us and we said it was OK for him to play. We could have blocked the transfer but we didn't want to do that. We want Tee to be able to play, whether it's for us or for someone else. I know they're still deciding but last I heard, he'll just have to miss out on the first two games."Wake up callsSept. 1 means college coaches can begin to make phone calls to prospective recruits in the Class of 2012. Defensive lineman Aziz Shittu (Atwater, Calif./Buhach Colony) said he received phone calls from USC, Texas A&M and Stanford with the first call coming from the Trojans at 6:00 a.m.Offensive lineman Jordan Simmons (Encino, Calif./Crespi) received calls from USC and Oregon and said the Trojans were also first out of the game calling at 5:55 a.m.
