Oregon State picked up a commitment over the weekend from three-star TE Caleb Smith (Renton, Wash./Kentridge), who chose the Beavers over a host of Pac-12 programs.Smith was a fulltime quarterback until midway through his junior season before converting to tight end. He landed his first offer from Idaho last May and soon the floodgates opened. Colorado, Montana, Purdue, UCLA, UNLV, Washington, Washington State and a few others all put offers on the table but the Beavers always seemed the team to beat."Oregon State is where I felt most comfortable and it always felt like home to me," Smith said. "I've liked Oregon State for a while now and I decided now was the best time to make my decision. I think I can play early at Oregon State and I'm on track to graduate early as well and enroll in time for spring ball next year and I'm excited about that."Smith took several unofficial visits this past summer and camped with Colorado and UCLA. He had a standout showing at the Nike camp at Oregon, showing the kind of upside that caused double digit colleges to offer, even though the athlete had played only half a season at his future college position.James close to pulling the triggerDefensive back Chanceller James (Spring Valley, Calif./Steele Canyon) took an unofficial visit to Boise State over the weekend and a commitment could be coming in the next day or two.James currently holds offers from a host of schools including Air Force, Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, New Mexico and San Diego State. He had over 100 tackles as a junior and added five touchdowns at receiver, but is being recruited strictly for defense. "This was my first visit to Boise State and I liked a lot," James said. "Boise State has everything I'm looking for in a school and I'm pretty set on committing there in the next few days. I didn't want to do anything on the trip because I wanted to make sure I came home and talked about it with my family."I need to talk to my dad about it but my plan is to commit on Tuesday. It's just a great school with a great coaching staff, I love the defense, I like how it's a small college town and the program is nationally ranked and among the best defenses in the country. I want to make an early decision so I can just focus on my senior year so in a few days, I think there's a great chance I'll be a Bronco."
