With limited scholarships to offer, the USC coaching staff can't afford to take too many chances with the class of 2012. Although not a well known recruit nationally, defensive lineman
Pio Vatuvei (Patterson, Calif./Patterson) is a considerable talent and was a very nice pickup for the Trojans.Vatuvei has had a great spring and summer and is one of the most versatile lineman in the region. He's a solid 6-foot-3, 260 pounds and qualified for The Opening by recording the top SPARQ rating in the nation of all defensive linemen tested at the Nike combines in the spring. He was the DL MVP runner up at the Stanford Nike camp and more than held his own at The Opening going up against some of the top offensive linemen in the nation. Vatuvei camped with Cal earlier this summer and after the Bears offered, it seemed like only a matter of time before the lineman announced he was heading to Berkeley. On Monday, Vatuvei picked up an offer from the Trojans and wasted no time in pulling the trigger."I talked to Coach [Clay] Helton at first and they said that the coaches had just had a meeting about me," Vatuvei told Erik McKinney of WeAreSC.com. "He said they'd like to offer me and when he handed the phone over to Coach [Lane] Kiffin, I told him I wanted to be a Trojan."The Trojans plan is to start him off as a defensive end. He had a solid junior season totaling 72 tackles and 12.5 sacks.Arizona, Cal, Colorado, Fresno State, Idaho, Oregon State, Utah, Washington and Washington State had all offered as well.
