• Oregon snags QB Jeff Lockie

On Thursday, reports surfaced that quarterback Jeff Lockie (Danville, Calif./Monte Vista) had made his college choice. The confusing part was that one report had the signal-caller headed to Oregon while another had him bound for San Diego State."I'm going to Oregon," Lockie said. "I actually committed Wednesday night. Coach [Mark] Helfrich offered me in the afternoon, and then after talking things over with my coaches and family, I decided I was ready to do this. I called up Coach Helfrich and also talked with Coach [Chip] Kelly and said I was ready to be a Duck."I've always liked Oregon and I camped with them last month and had a really good time. I like the offense a lot and feel it's a good fit for me. I'm a dual-threat guy but feel that I'm a guy that can throw the ball and make plays with my arm as well as my legs when needed."The Ducks have already taken one signal-caller in this class -- highly touted Jake Rodriguez (Rocklin, Calif./Whitney) -- but that wasn't a negative for Lockie."I talked about that with my coaches," Lockie said. "The way we see it, any school you go to, you're going to have to compete with someone. I'm ready for that and I'm looking forward to that. The way I look at it, it's probably better to compete with someone you're coming in with rather than someone who has already been in the system for a few years."Oregon was the best fit for me, so I wasn't going to let what someone else did affect what I wanted to do. I'm excited to be a Duck right now and can't wait to get there. I feel bad about some of the miscommunication about the San Diego State thing, because I've gotten a ton of calls on that. SDSU is a great school and were the first to offer me, but I had to follow my heart and that led me to Oregon."Lockie said there's a chance he could graduate early and enroll in Eugene in time for spring ball, but he hasn't made a decision. As a junior, the quarterback earned second-team all-state underclass honors after throwing for close to 2,500 yards and 32 touchdowns and rushing for 6 more.
