The Opening brought together some of the best players in the country and the West region was definitely well represented. Here's a look at a few of the top uncommitted offensive players from the event and where they're currently leaning. We'll look at the defensive side of the ball later in the week.On the offensive side of the ball, four of the six quarterbacks were from the West and all have made their college choices. Ironically, the player who came in to the week as the least heralded in the group,
Tanner Mangum (Eagle, Idaho/Eagle), had the best showing and his stock is soaring. Mangum has already committed to BYU and looks very solid but it will be interesting to see if a few of the elite college programs still looking for a quarterback make a run at Mangum.
Connor Brewer (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral) is sewn up for Texas,
Zach Kline (Danville, Calif./San Ramon Valley) was recruiting for Cal all week and despite a recent offer from USC,
Jake Rodrigues (Rocklin, Calif./Whitney) is very solid to Oregon.
KeiVarae Russell (Everett, Wash./Mariner) was the lone running back from the region and his recruitment will be very intriguing to watch. There are some who feel Washington will land Russell along with the other top in-state prospects and that's definitely a real possibility. Cal however is also doing very well with Russell and may even be the team to beat at this point. Notre Dame is another school in the mix and will definitely get an official visit and Russell will more than likely take most of his visits before making his decision. The tight end position was almost as well represented as the quarterbacks with three of the six pass catchers from the West.
Taylor McNamara (San Diego, Calif./Westview) had a great tournament and was right there with Florida's
Sean Price as the top tight end in the event. His commitment to Arizona is strong but it wouldn't surprise if he decided to take a visit or two in the fall. Speaking of taking visits, watch the recruitment of
Chris Kourtzidis (Orange, Calif./Lutheran) very closely. Kourtzidis committed to Florida State a month ago but didn't really mesh too well with the other Nole commits and there are questions of how comfortable the tight end will be in Tallahassee. Cal was his runner up and Kourtzidis spent a lot of time with Kline all week.
Jalen Cope-Fitzpatrick (Rocklin, Calif./Whitney) committed to USC about a second after being offered and he was wearing a Trojans hat all week. The tight end suffered an accidental head butt in Game 1 and unfortunately wasn't able to return to action. There were 10 receivers from the West and all but four have already committed, although two of those commitments look very soft.
Malik Gilmore (Lakewood, Calif.) is solid to Oregon State,
Deontay Greenberry (Fresno, Calif./Washington Union) is solid to Notre Dame. Greenberry had an incredible week on both sides of the ball and was one of the most talked about players by the coaches and athletes.
Richard Smith (Long Beach Poly, Calif.) will take trips but said he's solid with Arizona State, and
Bryce Treggs (Bellflower, Calif./St. John Bosco) committed to Cal during the week. While still saying they're publicly committed, Arizona State commit
Kenny Lawler (Upland, Calif./Updand) and USC commit
Jaydon Mickens (Los Angeles, Calif./Dorsey) will both likely end up elsewhere.Lawler was wearing a UCLA shirt all week and if signing day was today, it's a good bet the Bruins would be the school of choice. Mickens was an early commitment to USC but the two haven't talked much in recent months and the feeling is Cal, UCLA and Washington have a solid shot here.Still on the board are
Darius Powe (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood),
Randy Uzoma (Canoga Park, Calif./Canoga Park), Kenny Walker (Richmond, Calif./Kennedy) and
Derrick Woods (Inglewood, Calif./Inglewood). Of the group, Walker could commit the soonest and nearly announced for Cal during the week. Washington is a close second and likely the only reason the receiver held off announcing. Woods has had USC and Oregon as his top schools for months, Uzoma will likely end up at Nevada and Powe appears wide open at the moment but does mention Cal, UCLA, and Oregon often. On the offensive line, six players made the event and just two are off the board.
Erik Magnuson (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon) is solid with Michigan and
Isaac Seumalo (Corvallis, Ore./Corvallis) is locked up for Oregon State. Magnuson struggled at times and missed the final workout with a minor injury, while Seumalo was a monster and one of the top guards in the event.Still on the board are
Zach Banner (Lakewood, Wash./Lakes),
Josh Garnett (Puyallup, Wash./Puyallup),
Kyle Murphy (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente) and
Jordan Simmons (Encino, Calif./Crespi) and all four had very good weeks.Murphy was easily among the top lineman in the camp on either side of the ball and took home the award for top player in the one-on-ones. He's close to narrowing down his list and look for Stanford, USC, Cal and Oregon to all make the short list.Simmons had a good week as well while battling a knee injury. He still needs to watch his weight closely but Simmons is a real talent. USC and Cal lead here and Oregon and Washington are right there as well.Banner and Garnett are very intriguing to watch because they're always linked together. Although the two are friends, there's also a rivalry there, although neither player would admit it publicly. Will they up at the same school? It's possible but if it happens, it won't be because one player is following the other school but rather they both just happened to pick the same school on their own. Both Banner and Garnett have huge lists after recently cutting things down. Banner likes Alabama, Cal, Florida State, LSU, Michigan, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Oregon, USC and Washington. Garnett likes Auburn, Cal, Michigan, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Oregon, Stanford, UCLA, USC and Washington.
