TE Ian Taubler (Fresno, Calif./Bullard) committed to UCLA on Friday, becoming the Bruins' fourth commitment of the year."He just committed this morning," Ian's father Brian said. "We're all very excited and happy to have this process over with. UCLA offers so much and out of all the schools recruiting Ian, they were always the most up front and honest with him from the very beginning. "Academics are huge in our family and that played a big role. I have an older son who plays at Yale, so Ian knew how important that was. He always wanted to play in California as well so that kind of narrowed it down to the big four Pac-12 schools. Cal was his No. 1 choice going in to this and they recruited him heavily but never offered. Then USC got involved and that's when things really got interesting."With just 15 scholarships to give this year, Taubler said he didn't think USC was really interested in taking a tight end in this class."I talked with the coaches and they said they wanted Ian to go to their skills camp two weeks ago," Brian Taubler said. "I said we didn't want to make the drive down if it was just going to be a waste of time. Coach [Clay] Helton said they had a ton of interest in Ian and would never ask us to come down otherwise."So we went down and he had a great workout. Afterwards, they spent another couple of hours with just him on his own and worked him over really good. They said they loved him and would be in touch. Coach Helton said they would have offered on the spot if they had 20 rides to give, but they would let us know soon what was up."Then just yesterday, we talked with the coaches and they said they were offering Ian a scholarship. They said they were offering Ian and [Jalen Cope-Fitzpatrick (Rocklin, Calif./ Whitney)] and wanted two tight ends so don't feel rushed to commit. Ian slept on it last night and then decided today that UCLA was the best fit for him. He loves the school and the campus and really believes the football program is going to turn things around and wants to be part of that."Taubler had a great showing at the Stanford Nike camp in May and was rated the top tight end at the camp by the coaching staff. He's a big, physical player and showed great hands catching everything thrown in his direction. He missed most of his junior season after battling pneumonia on two occasions, but was an all-state underclass selection as a sophomore at defensive end."UCLA originally liked him at defensive end," Taubler said. "Then they saw him at the Nike camp and offered the next week as a tight end and said he was now the top guy on their board at the position. As a dad, I'm very proud right now. I think anyone would be excited if they had a son who had a chance to go to UCLA or USC, two great schools with great academic reputations. It was a tiring process though and I know Ian is definitely relieved it's over."In addition to UCLA and USC, Taubler also held offers from Arizona, Fresno State, and Oregon State.
