Mike Rice said he was going to hit the ground running when he took the Rutgers job, but this isn't running -- this is a full sprint. Rice and Rutgers landed their fourth commit for the Class of 2011 in PG
Myles Mack (Paterson, N.J./St. Anthony), who is No. 71 in the ESPNU 100 and the 16th-ranked point guard in the country. He joins 6-foot-6 SF
Malick Kone (St. George, Va/Blue Ridge School), 6-8 PF
Derrick Randall (Brooklyn, N.Y./South Kent) and 6-8 PF
Kadeem Jack (Queens, N.Y./South Kent School) in Rutgers' class and what's impressive is that Rice has yet to even coach a game. He's been able to sell his vision of the program to the players. Mack is a playmaking guard who combines a dangerous 3-point shot with the quickness to get anywhere he wants on the court. He has deep range and unwavering confidence in his shot. At just 5-10 and 155 pounds, Mack is undeniably undersized both in terms of his height and his weight, but he's tough and extremely competitive. More importantly, he's fearless. He'll drive into the paint and utilize a series of floaters, pull-up jumpers and wide angle lay-ups. He has solid body control and finishes at a surprisingly high rate despite his size. While Mack has scoring in his DNA, he must recognize when his team needs his as a scorer and when it needs him to distribute the ball and make plays that way. He plays for Hall of Fame coach Bob Hurley, who is as good at grooming point guards as there is in the country. He'll continue to refine Mack's point guard skills and inject the mentally it takes to be a great point guard in the Big East. The bigger picture here is what Rice is doing at Rutgers. He's putting his stamp on the program and it's obvious the blueprint is to land local talent. He's assembling a talented class so far -- and already has Upper Marlboro (Md.) Progressive Christian Academy SF
Jordan Goodman, a member of the ESPNU 60, locked up for the Class of 2012 -- and the Scarlet Knights are not done yet. Look for Rice to continue to hit the tri-state area and bring more local recruits to Rutgers.
