Clyde Smith, a rising junior guard from the Hotchkiss School in Connecticut, is coming off a big summer and seeing his recruitment pick up as a result. The Houston, Texas native made a quick impact in his first season at Hotchkiss, but brought his game to another level by this summer."Clyde has a tremendous work ethic. It was only a matter of time that others would be able to see the fruits of his labor," said Hotchkiss coach Fred Benjamin. "He had a very successful June and July and was able to show that he could make something positive happen every time he touched the ball."Smith's summer began at the Nike Hoop Jamboree where his team captured the camp championship. He began the month of July by leading his New Heights U-16 team to the semifinals of the adidas Invitational and continued that pace throughout the remainder of the month, leading New Heights to three championships in their next four events.New Heights' final event of the summer was the NYC Summer Classic, where Smith scored 17 points in the finals over Long Island Lightning Dingle, leading his team to their third championship of the summer and picking up MVP honors in the process. In the midst of his team's success this year, Smith also demonstrated the ability to handle the rock. Known primarily for his long-range shooting prowess up to this point in his career, Smith came into the summer boasting a stronger body, tighter handle, and enhanced explosiveness. Those qualities helped him make plays for himself and his teammates over the course of the long month.Benjamin recalls a story that proved to him that Smith was embracing all that went into being a point guard. "He made the statement, 'It's my job as the point guard to make people enjoy playing the game. When I do that, the accomplishments will be greater because inclusion is more conducive to success vs. exclusion.'"With a vocabulary like that, it isn't surprising to hear that Stanford is among the schools that have been recruiting Smith the hardest. Notre Dame became the first high-major program to offer a scholarship in the late spring and was quickly followed by Northwestern. Oklahoma, Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, Baylor, and Boston College are also actively recruiting the talented guard."His improvement is a testament to hard work and a love for the game," Benjamin said. "I truly believe that Clyde is just scratching the surface of his potential."
