Manhattan coach Barry Rohrssen finally got his man on Tuesday.Davontay Grace, a 6-foot-2, 206-pound point guard from Jefferson High School in Brooklyn, N.Y., committed to the Jaspers after being recruited by Rohrssen and his staff for the better part of the last three years.Grace previously committed to St. John's last year when Norm Roberts was at the helm of the program, but opted to de-commit when Steve Lavin replaced Roberts this spring. In landing Grace, the Jaspers were able to beat out several BCS-level programs that had actively recruited the Jefferson guard since his de-commitment from St. John's as well as a variety of other programs from the tri-state area that were trying to get involved.Grace is a playmaking guard with a powerful build and good athleticism. He has a lethal crossover dribble and gets into the lane like a tailback, exploding through gaps in the defensive line. He can also elevate for short pull-ups or knock down open shots from behind the three-point line.Jefferson coach Bud Pollard says that under Rohrssen's tutelage his point guard has the potential to be a star in the MAAC.While a motivated Grace does have a potentially large impact on the MAAC next season perhaps the better comparison is to that of former Pittsburgh guard LaVance Fields who had the same stock, strong body and diverse playmaking skills that makes Grace so effective.Grace becomes the first member of Manhattan's 2011 recruiting class, but promises not to be the last as Rohrssen is one of NYC's most proven recruiters.
