Sean Grennan (Toms River, N.J./ Monsignor Donovan) committed to Davidson on Thursday afternoon, and I think it is a great fit.The 6-foot-2 guard had taken unofficial visits to Boston College, Michigan and Seton Hall this spring and was receiving interest from several other high-level schools before making his pledge to Davidson coach Bob McKillop. It's so refreshing, especially at this time of year, to see someone make their decision based on where they can be most successful instead of just where they can get to the highest level. My first good look at Grennan came this past April, when he led his New Jersey ShoreShots team to the finals of the Providence Jam Fest. Grennan played both on and off the ball, made shots from all over the court, and showed a well-rounded skill set and basketball savvy.Ironically, while I was watching him on Sunday I overheard one college coach say, "he's got a little bit of Steph Curry in him" as he ran his man off a series of screens before drilling another deep jumper. While I don't believe that Grennan's career at Davidson is likely to match that of Curry's, I do believe that his talents will be maximized in a Davidson system that is perfectly suited for him. While McKillop's brand of basketball puts five skilled players on the court together and emphasizes the 3-point shot, Davidson has been at their best over the years when they've also played at a quick tempo. While Grennan's prowess as a long-range shooter is the first thing you notice about his game, he also possesses the handle and court sense to play either guard spot. He could be especially valuable as a secondary ballhandler, giving Davidson an outlet on either side of the court and consequently enabling them to speed up the tempo again. The biggest knock on Grennan is a lack of physical strength and while he has actually improved his body in the last year, there is little doubt that he would have struggled with the physicality of defending a bigger high-level guard. Although he still undoubtedly needs to get stronger, his ability to defend isn't quite as much of a concern at Davidson as it would have been in other places. In short, Grennan may not have ended up in a top conference, but don't be surprised if he is the latest in a long line of sharp-shooting guards to help Davidson knock off some of those big boys.
