Zaid Hearst (Silver Spring, Md./Salisbury School) has been a busy man during the first half of July. The 6-foot-4 shooting guard that runs with Mid-Atlantic Select during the AAU season began his busy month in Reading, Pa., for Hoop Group Elite Camp (July 5-8). He made the drive to Boston on the morning of July 9 for the New England Elite 75 Showcase. Hearst was back in the car the next day on his way to Neptune, N.J., where his Mid-Atlantic Select squad would be in action. Following their stay in New Jersey, Select stopped in Hamden, Conn., for two games on July 13 at the Super 16 Showcase, before ending the period in Morgantown, W. Va., for the West Virginia University Jam Fest. Despite the many miles logged, Hearst has yet to show any signs of fatigue, while on the floor. "Zaid is a kid that plays extremely hard. He is very physical and loves contact," said Mid Atlantic Select coach James Lee. "He brings energy, scoring, leadership, and toughness to go along with a winner's mentality and a tremendous work ethic."Hearst is also a very versatile player. He is capable of playing all three perimeter positions and while Lee believes he is most effective scoring the ball, Hearst is also an accomplished facilitator who can create shots for his teammates. With Hearst seeking out every opportunity for exposure this month, college coaches have begun to take notice of his talents. While Lee says his star swingman is still wide open right now, he reports scholarship offers from UC Irvine, New Hampshire, UMBC, St. Francis PA, and Mount St. Mary's along with strong interest from Drexel and Towson. "It will come down to the right academic fit as well as the chance to step in and play right away," Lee said. "Also, he's a kid who is all about player development, so for him the best fit would be a coaching staff that really focuses on and emphasizes player development."
