While the vast majority of high major college coaches descended on South Carolina for the beginning of the Nike Peach Jam on Tuesday, several made a stop in Connecticut along the way for the third annual Super 16 Showcase. The event featured a variety of top programs from around the Northeast including the the New England Playaz, New York Panthers, Connecticut Basketball Club, New Heights, Expressions Elite, New Jersey ABC, Rivals Basketball Club, and others. Here are a few of the highlights from the event:• A mid-day matchup between New Jersey ABC and BTI Pump n' Run from California put two of the premier academic-oriented AAU programs in the country against each other. The game drew a slew of Ivy and Patriot coaches with virtually every school in both leagues being represented and Harvard's Tommy Amaker, Brown's Jesse Agel and Penn's Jerome Allen being among the 15 Division I head coaches on hand.• Andre Drummond (Middletown, Conn./St. Thomas More) made his sole appearance in the first half of the live period, having just returned from Germany a day earlier after capturing the gold medal at the U-17 FIBA World Championships. While Drummond took the day off to get some much-needed rest, that didn't stop West Virginia coach Bob Huggins from sitting front and center as Connecticut Basketball Club's bench scored a huge victory over the Panthers.• Other notable faces in the crowd included NBA player Rafer Alston, who coached the Panthers team and 100-plus college coaches.• The New England Playaz had a plethora of high-major talent on their roster with super sophomores Alex Murphy (South Kingstown, R.I./St. Mark's) and Kaleb Tarzcewski (Claremont, N.H./St. Mark's) to go along with Naadir Tharpe (Worcester, Mass./Brewster Academy) and Markus Kennedy (Philadelphia/Winchendon) from the Class of 2011. Murphy shined the brightest as he continues to take his game to unprecedented levels with the addition of some newfound bounce to accompany his trademark skill set and basketball I.Q.• Two rapidly-rising big men in the Class of 2012 went head to head as T.J. Parker (Bridgeport, Conn./St. Joseph) and Evan Cummins (Westborough, Mass./Northfield Mt.-Hermon) matched up. Parker and his Connecticut Elite team came out on top, although both young power forwards seem to be on the verge of challenging for ESPNU 100 status.• New Heights small forward Jermaine Sanders (New York/Rice) continued to play well, showing his versatility with a smooth stroke from behind the arc and using his size and strength to bully opposing swingmen when creating his own shot off the perimeter.• Other players who performed well included Middlesex Magic SF Pat Connaughton (Arlington, Mass./Saint John's Prep), Connecticut Basketball Club PF Brandon Sherrod (Stratford, Conn./Stratford), Connecticut Select SG Josh Turner (Hamden, Conn./Sacred Heart) and BTI Pump n' Run C Kenyatta Smith (La Canada, Can./Flintridge).
