Jordan Laguerre (Manchester, N.H./ New Hampton) gave UMass coach Derek Kellogg his verbal commitment on Friday night, which keeps home one of New England's most talented players in the Class of 2011.The 6-foot-1 combo guard is the second player to commit to the Minutemen within the last month, joining Hofstra transfer Chaz Williams, who will have three years of eligibility remaining."I have been down three times, played with the team, and gotten to know the underclassmen," Laguerre said. "I like the kids I'm going to be playing with, feel like I can talk to the coaches, and like the school itself."While a Laguerre/Williams backcourt tandem may be slightly undersized, it provides UMass with two quick, playmaking guards that should be perfectly suited for the Minutemen's dribble-drive system. Laguerre isn't a pure point guard, but has the rare talent to make plays on both ends of the floor. He is tremendously quick, athletic, able to get wherever he wants with his dribble and a terrific on-ball defender.Laguerre's legal guardian Jeff Gore, who is an assistant coach at Division II Southern New Hampshire University, said Laguerre's talent has stood out since he was just a young boy."He always had an ability to make difficult shots," Gore said. "When he was younger he would take some crazy shots, but he made them. He always took to coaching very well and so he just kept progressing and progressing."UMass has been in rebuilding mode since Kellogg took over the program two years ago, but the Minutemen have recruited at a very high level and appear poised to be one of the most improved teams in the Atlantic 10 next year.In addition to Laguerre and Williams, UMass also has highly-regarded Jesse Morgan who will become eligible in December as well as rising sophomore Freddie Riley, giving them plenty of depth and firepower in the backcourt."There is a lot of talent there," Laguerre said. "The program is definitely going in the right direction and I want to be a part of it."
