It has been a tough spring for the basketball program at Providence College, to say the least. However, things are starting to turn around. Last week, the Friars officially hired Chris Driscoll to replace lead recruiter Pat Skerry, who resigned to take a similar position on the staff at Pittsburgh. Driscoll was the general manager and assistant coach of the BABC AAU program and has local recruiting ties. "Providence is getting a law and order guy who brings discipline as well as someone who has developed terrific basketball acumen to our system," said Leo Papile, head coach and founder of the BABC. "Specifically, defensively I think he can be an asset to anyone."By bringing in Driscoll, it ensures that incoming freshman Gerard Coleman (West Roxbury, Mass./The Tilton School) and Ron Giplaye (Wilmington, Del./ Notre Dame Prep), who had recent concerns about the Friars, will be staying put. Coleman is a 6-foot-4 swingman, projected to be one of the top incoming freshmen in the Big East next year and one of the Friars most anticipated recruits in recent years.Driscoll also gives Providence an immediate pipeline to the BABC, New England's most storied AAU program. Plus, he has ties to a variety of other Nike-affiliated grass roots programs through the BABC.He is the latest in a long line of BABC coaching alumni to move into the college ranks, including the likes of current Division I head coaches Mike Jarvis (Florida Atlantic), Karl Hobbs (George Washington), and Tim O'Shea (Bryant) and according to Papile his latest protégé has all the knowledge and skills to have similar success.Discipline, defense, and recruiting will certainly go a long way towards helping Providence get things going in a right direction again.
