It was just about one year ago that
Justin Burrell (Dumfries, Va./Potomac Senior), a 5-foot-7 point guard, committed to Mount St. Mary's and coach Milan Brown."They were comfortable with small guards and they showed a lot of interest in me," Burrell said. "They came to a lot of my games and recruited me the heaviest so I committed to them early."With his recruitment behind him, Burrell had a huge senior season at Potomac, averaging 20.0 points, 8.0 assists and 4.0 steals per game, while being named second team All-Met by the Washington Post and second team All-State in Virginia AAA. However, when Brown opted to leave Mount St. Mary's in favor of the head coaching job at Holy Cross earlier this spring, Burrell found himself in an unexpected situation. "When coach Brown left I waited to see who they gave the job to and then once that happened I spoke with the new coach and asked for my release," he said. "Then I went up to talk to coach Brown."For Burrell, the decision to commit to Brown wasn't any more difficult than it was the first time around. "Holy Cross is an opportunity for me to excel both academically and athletically," he said. "I became comfortable with coach Brown and his coaching staff when they were at Mount St. Mary's. I felt so comfortable with them that I decided to follow them to Holy Cross."The only problem was that Holy Cross didn't have any scholarship available in the class of 2010, so Burrell will head to prep school for a year at Fishburne Military Academy in Virginia before joining the Crusaders in the Class of 2011. Burrell is a creative lead guard who makes plays for himself and others. He is very quick off his dribble, a good passer inside the lane and equally-dangerous from behind the 3-point line.
