The University of Massachusetts picked up a commitment from Chaz Williams on Friday, who will be transferring following his freshmen season with Hofstra. Williams earned All-Freshman honors from the CAA last year at Hofstra, while holding down the starting point guard position for most of the season and averaging over 9.8 points and 4.2 rebounds per game.Williams visited the Amherst, Mass., campus earlier in the week and came away knowing that was where he wanted to be."I knew coach [Derek] Kellogg was a great coach," Williams said. "Getting to meet him and spend time with him, I found out he was a great person also. The entire coaching staff, coach [Adam] Ginsburg, coach [Antwon] Jackson, coach [Shyrone Chatman], everyone on the coaching staff and all the players, it just felt like I made a connection right away."Williams is an undersized, but explosively quick and athletic lead guard who is at his best when allowed the freedom to make plays and he said he feels like UMass' offensive system would be an ideal fit for him."With the dribble drive the coaches said they felt like I could be a good fit in their offense and I agree," he said.Williams committed to former Hofstra coach Tom Pecora during his sophomore season at Bishop Ford High School in Brooklyn, N.Y. It wasn't until Pecora left Hofstra to take the same position at nearby Fordham and then newly appointed coach Tim Welsch was forced to resign this spring that Williams asked for his release. He generated interest from a variety of schools, but was expected to choose between UMass, Seton Hall and Rutgers where former Hofstra assistant Van Macon had recently joined the staff, but cancelled his remaining visits following his trip to UMass last week.Williams will sit next season per NCAA transfer rules, but will have three years of eligibility beginning in the fall of 2011.
