Naadir Tharpe (Worcester, Mass./Brewster Academy, a rising senior point guard, decommitted from Providence on Wednesday. The ESPNU Super 60 prospect originally committed to the Friars in March and his decision to open up his recruitment comes less than a week after assistant coach Pat Skerry left the Providence staff to take a similar position at Pittsburgh. Skerry had been the lead recruiter for Tharpe."Coach Skerry was the guy who was recruiting me the whole time; the one who I was close with," Tharpe said. "Once he left I just wanted to look at my other recruitment and see what was out there."When Tharpe originally committed to Providence, he selected the Friars over offers from Boston College and UNLV. However, while Tharpe says Providence remains on his list, he is likely to become a prime target for a variety of other high major programs that are looking for a point guard heading into the July live period.New England Playaz director T.J. Gassnola reports that Rutgers, Wake forest, Arizona, Miami, St. John's, and Georgia Tech have already called him to express interest. Despite Tharpe's decision to open up his recruitment, both he and Gassnola had nothing but positive things to say about Providence and head coach Keno Davis."Keno Davis handled this very well," Gassnola said. "He was very professional. We hope that we will be able to send other Playaz to Providence in the future."Tharpe is a playmaking point guard with great court vision and passing ability. He makes plays for himself and others, is consistently able to drive the ball into the teeth of the defense, and is more versatile since developing a much more consistent 3-point shot. He would be best utilized in a fast-paced system at the next level where he was given the freedom to handle the ball and be creative in the open floor.
