With Los Angeles and North Carolina being the focal points of the grassroots basketball world this weekend, the Gym Rat Challenge brought the best of the rest to Albany, N.Y.The sheer size of the Gym Rat Challenge has helped to make it a prominent event in the Northeast because the tournament attracts upwards of 200 teams. This year was no different as 48 teams competed in the U-15 bracket, 72 teams in the U-16 bracket and 92 teams in the U-17 bracket. The tournament lasted three days, so depth and endurance both proved critical. In the U-17 bracket championship, the Jersey Shore Warriors defeated the Boston Warriors, 61-51, in the final. The U-16 final featured a dramatic finish as the Metro Hawks knocked off FiDonce United with a game-winning buzzer beater. There was far less drama in the U-15 division as the Boston Amateur Basketball Club steamrolled their way to the final, never winning by less than 20 points, before knocking off Rochester Franchise 56-45 in the championship game. The title is just the latest in what has been an absolutely dominant spring season for BABC. After beginning the season with a run to the Elite Eight at the Boo Williams tournament in Virginia, the BABC U-15 squad hasn't dropped a game in two months, having taken gold medals at the New England AAU Super Regional and Massachusetts AAU State Tournament in addition to the championships at the Providence Jam Fest, King of New York Classic, and now the Gym Rat Challenge. Their success has been a product of their depth, team chemistry and collaborative work ethic. Candidly, they are refreshing to watch on the grassroots circuit because they constantly play hard, defend and share the basketball.
Goodluck Okonoboh (Boston/The Tilton School) was a fitting choice as the tournament MVP this weekend. Although he wasn't the team's leading scorer, Okonoboh is the team's defensive anchor and an absolute eraser at the end of their press, averaging over 13 rebounds and five blocks per game. However, the most impressive part of his weekend could have been what he had to say after winning the MVP award."This is a team sport and this award should be for all of us," said Okonoboh. You don't hear that type of sentiment being expressed too often these days by a 15-year old, especially one who manages to dominate games without having to score too many points.
