Like many top basketball prospects from around the country,
Alex Murphy (South Kingstown/St. Mark's) traveled to North Carolina this past weekend to play in the Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions. He led his New England Playaz to a 5-1 record and a spot in the finals of the Select bracket before the team had to leave to catch their flight back to Boston. However, Murphy didn't fly home with the rest of his team. He and his family stayed in North Carolina so the rising junior could take an unofficial visit to Duke on Monday morning. "It went really well. The first hour and a half it was me, my mom, my dad, and my little brother sitting in coach [Mike] Krzyzewski's office with him, coach [Chris] Collins, and coach [Steve Wojciechowski], just sitting there talking," said Murphy. "We were sitting there and coach Krzyzewski said that at Duke they don't say you officially have a scholarship until your test scores and paperwork are in but that in 2012,
Shabazz Muhammad (Las Vegas/Bishop Gorman) and I are the guys that he really wants and that I have an offer."Murphy, a 6-foot-8 forward who stars for the St. Mark's School in Massachusetts, comes from great stock. His father, Jay Murphy, played for Boston College before moving onto the NBA and is a member of the school's Hall of Fame. Big brother, Erik Murphy, just finished his freshman season playing for Billy Donovan at Florida. Murphy's latest schools of interest include Duke, Florida, Arizona, Kansas, Texas, Syracuse, Butler, Michigan, Boston College and Wagner, among others. All but Texas have offered, according to Murphy, while Wagner finds its way on the list per Danny Hurley's new assistant Luke Murray, who formerly coached with the New England Playaz.
