In a talent rich state like New Jersey, Paterson Catholic is one of the few high schools that has been able to separate itself from the pack and establish its basketball program as one of the state's true powerhouses. The list of prominent alumni include NBA player Tim Thomas (Villanova), Darryl Watkins (Syracuse), Kevin Freeman (UConn), Jordan Theodore (Seton Hall), Donald Hand (Virginia), Marquis Webb (Rutgers), and DeShaun Williams (Syracuse/Iona).This season, the Cougars ran off 28 straight wins before falling to Bob Hurley's St. Anthony team in the North Non-Public B title game. Their final record of 28-1 was good enough for No. 31 in the nation by ESPN RISE. However, on April 21 the Paterson Roman Catholic Diocese announced that the school would close its doors following this school year. Diocese officials cited rising debt and plummeting donations.Paterson Catholic's enrollment was reportedly at 310 students this year, down from roughly 400 a year ago. Among the approximately 225 non-graduating students, who will be looking for new high schools next year, are a handful of extremely talented young basketball players, including the likes of
Kyle Anderson (North Bergen, N.J.),
Myles Mack (Paterson, N.J.),
Derrick Randall (Brooklyn, N.Y.),
Reggie Cameron (Paterson, N.J.) and
Kavon Stewart (Paterson, N.J.). Anderson, one of the top rising juniors in the country, has already confirmed plans to head to St. Anthony next year and while there are numerous rumors floating around about the rest of the group, no one else has yet to finalize their plans according to Paterson Catholic head coach Damon Wright.Wright also stressed that he wasn't going to have any part in placing kids at various schools."Anyone who knows me knows I don't get caught up in that," he said. "That's for each student and their family to decide."What can be certain is that there will be plenty of opportunities for all of Paterson's young standouts.Mack, a rising senior point guard drawing high major interest, is reportedly coming close to a decision on his future. The 5-foot-10 point guard is considering following Anderson to St. Anthony, but is also considering two other local powerhouses in St. Benedict's and St. Patrick.Randall, a 6-8 power forward in the Class of 2011, has been rumored to be heading to South Kent, although as of late last week Wright said that no final decision had been made.Cameron and Stewart, the two youngsters of the group in the Class of 2013, both have the potential to blossom into high-level prospects. Cameron is a 6-5 forward with a super smooth shooting stroke. He will see his stock boost, once he grows into his body a little more. Stewart is an undersized lefty point guard who could be a star in the making thanks to his ball skills, court vision and poise. As for coach Wright himself -- the man who built Paterson Catholic into the program it is today -- he isn't sure what his plans are for the future. He is still holding out hope for a miracle to keep Paterson Catholic open, but if nothing materialized he may even take the year off.
