Grant Verhoeven (Visalia, Calif./Central Valley Christian School), a 6-7 sophomore power forward, has put together a phenomenal spring campaign. Although he still has two more years of high school basketball, his skill level and savviness trump most players his age. However, this isn't that surprising considering his father, Pete, was a standout at Fresno State under the Boyd Grant regime. Verhoeven, who plays for the Central California based Organize Chaos Elite, is beginning to garner interest from the likes of Fresno State, USC and Stanford. The hybrid 4-man has a high basketball IQ and is deceptively bouncy in the paint area. Plus, his footwork in the post is quite good and he has terrific hands. In terms of school interest, he is pretty much wide open at this stage, but he said he would like to stay on the West Coast. "I've taken an unofficial visit to Stanford and I loved it. The campus was beautiful and of course the academics are top notch," said Verhoeven. His AAU team, Organized Chaos Elite, plays an up-tempo style thanks to a rock-solid guard duo of 6-3 sophomore
Alex Fertig (Clovis, Calif./Buchanan) and 6-2 junior
Denzel Johnson (Fresno/Clovis West), who are savvy beyond their years. With Grant manning the middle and filling the lane in transition, Organized Chaos Elite is one of the few AAU teams that play fast and with purpose in mind. While Grant is still a long way from making a college decision, his blossoming talent, energy level and feel for the game will attract more and more coaches. Combine this scenario with his father's pedigree and the future looks quite bright.
