• Volquez is patient about his return

On Friday, Cincinnati Reds pitcher Edinson Volquez will take a minor step in his major rehabilitation from Tommy John surgery, but it will be meaningful. Although he's been throwing lightly for a couple of weeks now, Volquez said that on Friday he'll throw three separate 25-pitch sessions from about 120 feet, but he won't throw with much force. Regardless, Volquez finally can see some progress after months of inactivity following elbow surgery in August.

The friendly, mellow Volquez -- an All-Star in 2008 who appeared ready to anchor the Reds' rotation in 2009 before his injury -- has the perfect demeanor for such a lengthy rehabilitation.
