Within the matter of a week, significant buzz has built around Cuban free agent infielder Adeiny Hechavarria, a slick-fielding shortstop who will turn 21 in April.
Reports have the Los Angeles Angels and the New York Yankees heavily interested in Hechavarria, and one American League executive said the Chicago Cubs will also be in on the bidding. Hechavarria has yet to be unblocked by the U.S. Office of Foreign and Assets Control, so he's not yet eligible to sign even though he was declared a free agent by Major League Baseball. Agent Bart Hernandez said he expects Hechavarria to be cleared soon, perhaps as early as this week. As soon as that happens, expect the bidding to intensify quickly.
