During a quiet moment prior to a Caribbean World Series game last year in Mexicali, Mexico, former Tigres del Licey manager Jose Offerman sat and intently watched batting practice as the bustle of pre-game activity surrounded him. Anyone who has been to the CWS knows that players' pre-game routines are far less regimented than they are in the majors. During the CWS players will joke around, play a game of pickle or simply chat with the multitudes of people on the field, which creates a distracting cacophony of noise and movement that's amost impossible not to get caught up in.
But Offerman seemed oblivious to it all. This was simply a moment for reflection, something Offerman does often. During one of those moments, I asked Offerman whether he thought he would ever return to the majors as a coach despite the negative publicity he received for the 2007 altercation he instigated while a member of the Atlantic League's Long Island Ducks. Offerman after having been struck by a pitch from Matt Beech charged the mound with his bat and struck both Beech and catcher John Nathans. Offerman was charged with two counts of second degree assault. He plea bargained and received only probation. But he hasn't played or coached in the United States since.
