Last weekend former Seattle Mariners slugger Edgar Martinez, in an interview with the Puerto Rican newspaper Primera Hora during an autograph session in Caguas, assessed his Hall of Fame chances when he appears on the ballot next year:
"I think the numbers are there. But there will be purists who aren't in favor of honoring players who have been designated hitters, so we'll have to wait and find out. It would be a great honor reaching the Hall of Fame in my first year of eligibility, but that's not for me to say. It's up to the voters. We'll see."
