Back in February, during a whirlwind 48-hour period, then-assistant to the general manager Mike Rizzo was sent by the Washington Nationals to the Dominican Republic to drastically overhaul the team's Dominican operations in the wake of the Esmailyn Gonzalez age scandal.
The scandal, which was uncovered by MLB's investigation unit, led the Nationals to shut down their academy at special assistant Jose Rijo's complex and fire several members of the staff, including top instructor Jose Baez, who had managed the Nationals' Dominican Summer League teams to championships in 2007 and 2008. Rijo was also terminated.
