The Los Angeles Angels' recent firing of international scouting supervisor Clay Daniels, who is under investigation by Major League Baseball as part of a probe into bonus skimming, has stalled the organization's actions in Latin America. Though the Angels aren't usually a big spender in the international signing period (which began on July 2), the upheaval has made them less active in signing even lower-priced prospects.
"This July 2 period is a pretty quiet time for the Angels this year," Angels scouting director Eddie Bane wrote in an e-mail. "I would think that next year we will be back in the hunt for July 2 types, but in 2009 it will be a little quiet. We are still in the hunt on some of the guys, but we will not be involved in mass this season."
