An unintended consequence of the Washington Nationals' move out of Jose Rijo's complex near San Cristobal was the costs that would fall on the San Diego Padres and Detroit Tigers, the two other teams that have academies near San Cristobal. For the past several seasons, the Nationals, Padres and Tigers all played most of their Dominican Summer League schedules against each other, which helped reduce travel costs.

Now, the Padres and Tigers, who train at Rijo's complex, have had to branch out and play teams in Boca Chica, which is at least a 2 ½ hour bus ride from San Cristobal. The Padres' director of professional and international scouting, Randy Smith, said such trips would cost the Padres at least $5,000 this summer, which is somewhat burdensome at a time when budgets are already stretched thin. Running an academy is already a costly venture. The Padres already spend $25,000 per month just to run a backup power generator at their academy.
