• Teams still searching for pitching help

The norm during the last week of March is for general managers and managers to bemoan the pain of their final cutdowns, the difficulty of paring from 28 players to the 25 who soon will be northbound. Not so this week. Oh, it is interesting that the American League East will open its season with David Price, Clay Buchholz and Phil Hughes in the International League, but otherwise, the most common thread in Florida and Arizona has been the potential pitching flaws. The Dodgers look as if they might have the best lineup and positional team in the National League, but Joe Torre admits he still is searching to fill out both his rotation and bullpen, and might have to rely on the youth of Chad Billingsley, Clayton Kershaw and James McDonald to start 75 to 95 games. The Brewers, coming off their dramatic finish to 2008, appear to be maturing into a power, but they are without CC Sabathia and Ben Sheets, and now probably will open the season without Trevor Hoffman. Ken Macha might have to close out games in April using Mitch Stetter, Todd Coffey and Seth McClung.
