Verde, Primo, Dan's Comp and Etnies footwear team rider Tony Neyer broke his left tibia and fibula during a skatepark demo in Portland, Ore. on Saturday. According to Etnies team manager John Povah, Neyer stepped down out of a smith to hard 180 and suffered a compound fracture above the ankle. Neyer was taken to the hospital and underwent surgery on Saturday night, and is reportedly doing well in recovery today.
Neyer was able to walk on Sunday morning with assistance.
Neyer was in Portland on an Etnies/Cinema Wheel Co. trip, doing demos at local parks and signings at local shops such as Goods BMX. According to the Athlete Recovery Fund's Aaron Cooke, ARF is currently working on booking Neyer a flight to return home to Long Beach, Calif. as soon as he is discharged from the hospital.
Fellow team riders on the trip with Neyer reached out via Twitter to report the news and send well wishes to Neyer while in surgery. "Everyone send good vibes out to my man Tony Neyer," said Corey Martinez. "Heal up G," he continued. Cinema Wheel Co. team rider Dakota Roche, also on the trip, remarked on Neyer's strength. "My dude Tony Neyer is one of the toughest ever. Send some posi-vibes his way y'all. Heal up soon homie."
Neyer, originally from Cincinnati, Ohio but currently living in Long Beach, Calif., is the second BMX pro to suffer a compound leg fracture in one week. Fit Bike Co. pro Van Homan broke his tibia and fibula last Sunday in North Carolina. "Break a leg Tony, all the real G's are doing it," Homan said sarcastically.
