Down home in Maine

I received a call from Geoff McDonald of Meathead Films last week asking if I'd come to Portland, Maine, for a couple of days to photograph Dan Marion, Shea Flynn and Andy Parry while they filmed for their 10th movie, which will be released in the fall. Having driven from Boston to Burlington, Vermont, earlier that morning, the prospect of getting back in my truck to drive across New England wasn't too appealing.

But when I considered the current weather pattern, which had dropped record snowfall on the East Coast, I couldn't say no, especially considering that parts of the coast, which see little snow due to their proximity to the Atlantic, had a good blanket of snow.

Portland is a two-hour drive north of Boston, which sits snug in the southern point of Casco Bay, a large natural harbor peppered with small islands that form a natural seawall from the North Atlantic. This queen city is Maine's largest, known for its fleet of lobster boats and, according to local pro skier Dan Marion (who may or may not be accurate), the largest number of bars and restaurants in the country per capita. The surrounding area is ringed with old forts overlooking the water that were built to protect the strategic port city. The architecture consists of classic New England brick buildings -- which make for interesting backdrops for sliding handrails.

With my mind made up, I pointed my truck south and headed to Maine. Check out these photos to see how the shoot went. Launch Gallery »
