Yankees still the team to watch Don't look for the Yankees to win 114 games this season, says New York first baseman Tino Martinez, but don't be surprised to see the World Series with a familiar AL representative in 2000. Admittedly at the ESPYs to "just hang out," Martinez joined an ESPN.com audince in a pre-awards show chat. In his Feb. 15 appearance, the former Mariner tried to put the Yankees' acheivement into works and looked ahead to next season. If you missed the chat, in which Martinez explained why so much is expected of the Yankees next season, an edited transcript follows. Martinez: Good day everyone. What is on your mind? Eric Rohloff: Do you think you might spend the rest of your career as a Yankee? Martinez: New York is the only place to play in my mind. I had a lot of great years in Seattle and had a lot of fun there. I met a lot of great people there. But playing for the Yankees in New York is what baseball is all about. Hopefully I will finish my career here. Kyle: So, Tino, do you think you guys can live up to all the hype again this year considering you have the same basic squad as last season? Martinez: We have a really good team coming back this year. We know how to win games and we find ways to win games. We may not win the same amount of games but we feel we will get back to the postseason and give ourselves a chance to win another World Series. BIG MOE FROM CHICAGO: Are you presenting an award tonight? If so, which one? Martinez: I'm doing nothing. The Yankees are up for team of the year award. They invited a bunch of the Yankees here and hopefully we will win the award. So I am just here to meet some people, enjoy myself and just hang out. Chris Winburn: Do you think the Yankees can repeat? Martinez: It's going to be tough but teams are gunning for the Yankees year in and year out. So it's not going to be any harder than in the past. It is not going to be easy for us but we have a great team coming back and have good chance to do it again. Sticky: What is different about this year's team? Martinez: Absolutely nothing. We have the exact same team coming back. We have another year of playing together under our belts so things should be even better this year. Hunter here: How will last season's experince help the team next season? Martinez: It will help a lot. When you have players like Scott Brosius and Chuck Knoblauch coming from other teams, they made a good adjustment to playing on this team and playing in New York. But this year they will be a lot more relaxed and play a lot better than in the past. Aubie: During the offseason how much time do you spend preparing for the upcoming season and what is your daily regimen as far training? Martinez: I am pretty much ready to start playing. I have been doing the same things as I usually do but we did have a shorter offseason after winning the World Series. So I have been just working out and getting in shape and getting ready for the new season. NY boy: What did winning the World Series mean to you? Martinez: It meant a lot. It is what you strive for as a player and an athlete. Winning the last two years is just a great memory to have. It is something you can keep with you the rest of your life and something you will never forget. no no: Anyone you are looking forward to seeing tonight at the ESPYs? Martinez: There are a lot of players I am a big fan of that I haven't met before. So I am looking forward to meeting them. I am just hoping to have a good time. That is all the time I have for now. Thanks for the questions. Take care.
