Welcome to ESPN.com's moderated chat room. On Friday, ESPN horse racing analyst Hank Goldberg dropped by to take questions on Saturday's Florida Derby and racing in general. Goldberg joined ESPN2 as a football analyst on its flagship sports news program SportsNight when the new network launched Oct. 1, 1993. He has also been a frequent contributor on ESPN Sports Radio since June 1992. Goldberg is known as "Hammerin' Hank" for his tough opinion on topical issues. Prior to joining ESPN2, Goldberg was play-by-play commentator for the Miami Dolphins flagship radio network WIOD-AM (1978-91) and anchor of WTVJ-TV's Sports Final (1982-93).

Hello everyone -- here we go. [1] Chris Russell from [161.15.254.254], at 11:06am ET In the Louisianna Derby this weekend, everyone is looking at the matchup between Dollarbill and Mill. Wind, but Hero's Tribute is looking like one to beat as well. What are your thoughts? [2] Hank Goldberg at 11:08am ET
I think Hero's Tribute looked good when he beat A P Valentine, but A P Valentine wasn't himself that day. He washed out and acted up. I really liked Dollar Bill in the Risen Star. [3] Chris from [198.77.181.8], at 11:08am ET Hank...Do you feel that coming off his last race that Outofthebox should be the favorite in the Florida Derby?? [4] Hank Goldberg at 11:09am ET
He won't be, but he's my favorite. I think he ran a strong race after a terrible start. He's never really run a bad race. Plus you can't ignore Bailey at Gulfstream. [5] Mr. J from [132.235.156.7], at 11:10am ET I know its early but do you have any predictions for the Derby? [6] Hank Goldberg at 11:11am ET
It is early ... The Derby is two months away. The Louisiana Derby will really help define things, moreso than the Florida Derby. I will tell you one thing -- forget Dubai. Prepping over there just doesn't work. [7] Tom from [64.81.171.228], at 11:13am ET Dear Hank: What would you recommend to someone who is interested in getting started in race horse ownership? Would you recommend staring by claiming? Auctions? Breeding/Stud service? Thank you. [8] Hank Goldberg at 11:16am ET
I did it myself by buying yearlings. But find a trainer you really trust and follow his advice. When you claim -- a lot of the time you're just claiming somebody else's problems. You have to be careful. Claiming is great though, if you want to get racing fast. It may not be the best long term. [9] muskie maark from [143.246.2.16], at 11:16am ET About dubai is there any hourse from over there that we should worry about I know wordly manner gave every body a scary and i think that you like that horse as well Mr. Goldberg [10] Hank Goldberg at 11:19am ET
Street Cry. But you have to race over here to get ready. I liked Worldly Manner's Derby. He was a terrific horse, but remember, as a 2-year-old he ran in California. Who knows what he would have done if he'd gotten the chance to prepare here say via the San Felipe or the Santa Anita Derby. [11] Chris from [198.77.181.8], at 11:19am ET Looking at the Florida Derby Entries...I am left wondering who this Invisible Ink is? and has he beaten quality horses? [12] Hank Goldberg at 11:20am ET
I respect Invisible Ink's trainer -- Todd Pletcher -- but the horse hasn't beaten anything yet. Great breeding. The right running style. He has had two trouble calls in his last two. If you like him, take a shot! [13] Brian Kelly from [63.87.19.235], at 11:21am ET What chance do you give City Zip this weekend in the Florida Derby? [14] Hank Goldberg at 11:22am ET
City Zip looks like he will be a nice miler someday, but not a Derby horse. [15] Chris from [198.77.181.8], at 11:23am ET Good Morning Hank...Do you have any thoughts on when Point Given is going to run??? I notice that on Espn.com they have him rated as the top 3 yr old but he hasn't started yet this year. [16] Hank Goldberg at 11:24am ET
He'll start next week in the San Felipe at Santa Anita. He's working great. Why is he ranked #1? I'm not sure why other than the Baffert connection. Two starts before the Derby may not be enough for this guy. [17] Richard Mazzochi from [207.109.173.81], at 11:25am ET Hey Hank you do a great job with the horses. My question is do you really think AP Valentine will run in the Derby and what kind of chance do you give Point Given? [18] jh from [199.115.16.41], at 11:29am ET Hank, what is your bet of the weekend [19] Hank Goldberg at 11:30am ET
I would say Outofthebox in the Florida Derby. Hope you cash a ticket on that one. Thanks everybody. See you soon. [20] Moderator at 11:36am ET
Hank's answer to the A P Valentine question didn't make it to the board. He talked to his trainer Nick Zito last week and Nick feels that the horse is back on track after being behind most of the year. Hank thinks he'll probably start him in the Flamingo Stakes. But Hank isn't really sure where the horse is physically. | ||||||
