Ruth Riley and the Notre Dame women's basketball team are riding high after two dominating wins over San Diego and
George Washington that have landed them in the NCAA's Sweet 16 for the third time in four years.
But the Fighting Irish center is focused on the game at hand, a Saturday matchup with a tough Texas Tech squad. And she minces no words about what will be the key to the game. "Not getting into foul trouble concerns me the most," says Riley. In case you missed Riley's March 22 chat, the following is an edited transcript. For more, check out Notre Dame's official athletics site. Darien Siddall: Hi, Ruth, Congrats on being an All-American. Alicia Ratay is having a great freshman year. Do you think she will be huge in your title run?
Ruth Riley: Yes, I do. Alicia has played outstanding for us this year and we are looking for her to continue to play well. Kelley: Ruth, What are your plans for the future? Do you want to play in the WNBA? Grad school? Marriage? It seems like you have so many options, what are you thinking? Ruth Riley: I would like to play basketball for as long as possible, and after grad-school, I am not quite sure yet. I am still looking into law school. As for marriage, I have yet to find a guy. Rowan: If there's an underrated player on your team, who is it? Ruth Riley: Probably Niele Ivy. She's our point-guard, she does so much for the team and with all of the other talent on the team she gets overlooked alot. Dennis: What concerns you most about your upcoming game with Texas Tech? Ruth Riley: Not getting into foul trouble concerns me the most. WestCoastHusky: The Big East has sent three teams into the Sweet 16. Having accomplished this, do you think the conference is finally getting some of the respect it deserves? Ruth Riley: I think its starting too. Connecticut has brought a lot of attention to the conference. Boston College is a team that is greatly improved. All of the teams are getting better. Bill: Is beating UConn on your mind? Ruth Riley: Not right now. We are focusing on Texas Tech right now. We have not thought about them since the Big East Tournament. Rowan: What are your thoughts on playing in Memphis? And, if/when you meet Tennessee in the Elite Eight, does it give the Lady Vols an unfair "home-court advantage"? Ruth Riley: I have never played there before, so I don't know what to expect. We haven't really thought about Tennessee too much, but it will be easier for their fans to get there because it is closer. But anything can happen in the tournament. Julie88: Congrats on a great year so far Ruth! I go to as many games as I can, I live about an hour away, and I'm dissappointed to see a lack of student support. Where are they? Do you feel your team gets enough support from the students? I've seen the crowd at the men's games. Get them to yours! Good luck in Memphis and on to Philly! Ruth Riley: Thanks for the support! About the students, I really don't know what to say about why they don't come to our games. J-Money: You are the program's first ever GTE Academic All-American, what is your major and what do you plan to do after you graduate? (besides the WNBA) Ruth Riley: I am a psychology and sociology double major. Irish1: What made you choose Notre Dame and what other schools were you considering? Ruth Riley: There were not alot of other schools I was considering. I knew that ND was where I wanted to go. It is close to home, I got along with the coaching staff, and the program was on the rise. sairish: Is Notre Dame going to wear the green uniforms against Texas Tech? Ruth Riley: I am really not sure about that one. Michelle: Ruth -- Do you ever get tired of the fame?? Ruth Riley: Sometimes you want to step outside of basketball and not be known just for your sport. But I think it has its advantages and disadvantages. Chad Brown: What is your favorite thing at Notre Dame? Ruth Riley: My favorite place on campus is The Crotto. Jeff: How do you maintain such a great GPA while dominating the post at the same time! Ruth Riley: The key to keeping up in school is time management and talking with your professors. Michelle: I was watching the news last week and the commentator said something about you and Troy Murphy being a cute couple ... any chance of that?? Ruth Riley: Not really, he actually has a girlfriend right now, so he's already taken. Darien Siddall: What was your best game this year in your opinion? Ruth Riley: Our last home game against Miami. I had a season-high of 36 points and 12 rebounds. Chad Brown: How does it feel to play in the NCAA Tournament? Ruth Riley: Its exciting, just the whole atmosphere of the tournament is different from the regular season. Brandon Rouch: Hello Ruth! I'm from North Miami, I was just wondering if you make it to the WNBA will your number one preference of team be the new Indiana team? Ruth Riley: Yes, I would like to stay as close to home as possible.
That's all the time I have for now. Thanks for all of the questions!
