It may be anyone's tournament to win, but according to ESPN's Ann Meyers, the Women's NCAA Tournament is still UConn's to lose.
"UConn is still the team to beat. They have so few weaknesses," says Meyers. "Shea Ralph has had such a great year along with everyone else." Meyers, in a recent chat with ESPN.com users, talked about the parity in this year's tournament and gave her top 15 candidates for the Kodak All-American Team. In case you missed Meyers' March 23 chat, the following is an edited transcript. Kelley: Ann, what do you think about the Irish? I have seen several of their games and Ruth Riley is just amazing. Do you think they can win it all? Ann Meyers: If Ruth stays out of foul trouble. They should beat Texas Tech but that will be a battle. Riley will have to play big, because Michelle Snow matches up with her well. They just have to play well and stay out of foul trouble. Dee: What do you think of ODU's team and their chances of going all the way to the Final Four? Ann Meyers: ODU is a fighter and the Midwest and the West are the toughest brackets. ODU has confidence and they have been to the Final Four before. They have the experience and they are hungry to get back. But they have their work cut out for them. Esupe29: UConn has already beaten Tennessee and La Tech this year. If they meet Georgia in the championship game, how do you think Georgia would match up against them? Ann Meyers: UConn is still the team to beat. They have so few weaknesses. Shea Ralph has had such a great year along with everyone else. UConn has only been to a Final Four three times and they want to get back. Georgia would have to play a near perfect game. Pam K: After covering so many NCAA Women's games, do you get tired of seeing the same powerhouses continue to get top talent, making it harder for the underdogs to establish competitive teams? Ann Meyers: Good question. That is what the U.S. is based on. The rich get richer. This is the first year that the parity has been so obvious. Yes UConn and Tennessee are strong, but nobody gave Purdue credit and nobody talked about Duke after they lost six players. It's refreshing to see a lot of new faces and teams this year. I think the powerhouses are fazing out and kids want to go somewhere they can beat those teams. A team like Santa Barbara, Erin Buescher, what a year she has had. The men have the same situation where you have Duke and UNC and Cincy, always on top. But this year, there is so much parity and it is great for the tournament. Bill S: Which regional will you be working for ESPN? Ann Meyers: East. With UConn, Oklahoma, Duke and LSU. UConn is obviously the favorite and they have played Oklahoma and won big but Oklahoma is still a dangerous team. Anything can happen in the tournament. Alicia: Which No. 1 seed do you think will not make to the Final Four? Ann Meyers: Right now I would say La Tech and Georgia could get beat. Ken: Have you ever thought about coaching the women's team at UCLA? Ann Meyers: They've got a coach that has been there seven years now and has done a wonderful job. I've not been asked to coach there. A lot of people ask me about coaching and even think I'm a coach but I kind of like what I am doing now. Kelly Hill: It's nice to always see your smiling face and hear your thoughful insights on our great game of women's basketball every spring. Keep up the good work! Ann Meyers: Thank you very much. I hope I do a good enough job that people enjoy watching the kids play. BOOG: The Pac-10 is so weak. Why? Ann Meyers: I don't think they are weak! The West coast doesn't get as much respect because people don't get to see them play as much. The expectations for the Pac-10 were based on UCLA. Oregon, Stanford, etc. shows you that they can compete. They got beat in the first and second rounds but I don't think they are a weak conference whatsoever. Brandonkronk: Who in your mind is the best all-around player? Ann Meyers: Well there isn't one. It's too difficult to answer. There are so many players who may not score big points or get a lot of rebounds but they do so much for their teams. Alicia: This year Tennessee had to overcome the loss of Holdsclaw and Jolly. How do you think the Lady Vols have done so far? Ann Meyers: I think they had to overcome those losses which is really tough. Nobody can replace Holdsclaw. Tennessee had to make a lot of adjustments. Michelle Snow had to get a lot of minutes and other players have moved around so it's taken them awhile to find each other. Pam: What is your impression of the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in Knoxville? Ann Meyers: I was in the first group that was inducted. It was the thrill of a lifetime. The exhibits are wonderful and the pictures and memorabilia hit upon all people who have contributed to the game, coaches, players, everyone. It's exciting to see where the women's game has come from. Steve W.: As a four-time Kodak All-American, who do you feel are the leading contenders to make the 2000 Kodak All-American Team that will be announced a week from (Thursday)? Ann Meyers: If you read my USA Today article on Wednesday, I picked 15 in alphabetical order. Go pick up a copy!
Svetlana Abrosimova, UConn Brandonkronk: If you could choose anyone to make a last second 3-pointer, who would you choose? Ann Meyers: Oh man! Who leads the nation in 3-point shooting? There are a lot of them to choose from. What a question. Stacy Frese and about a dozen more. Mac: What does Texas Tech need to do to defeat Notre Dame? Ann Meyers: They have to play good defense to advance. Tech is not quite as big as Notre Dame but they are going to have to rebound with them. Notre Dame has such a good inside-outside game so their big players are going to have to come to play. Thank you to everyone for all your support and interest. You make the game more fun to be around. We'll talk again next week! |
