'All the regions are tough regions'

It's anybody's tournament. At least that is how ESPN women's college basketball analyst Ann Meyers sees it.

"This year probably is the most parity we've had in the women's game," says Meyers.

Meyers chatted with users immediately following the announcement of the NCAA Tournament bracket and said she was not surprised with most of the pairings.

"Any of the teams that have gotten any recognition have all deserved it," says Meyers.

In case you missed the March 12 chat, an edited transcript follows.

Ann Meyers: The biggest question is Florida not getting in. The teams that got in, they all deserved it. The SEC is the No. 1 conference, if you play such a tough preseason, is that affecting them? Maybe you play a little lighter schedule to guarantee some wins. I think overall the committee did a really good job.

Tennessee: Who are the final four teams gonna be this year?

Meyers: I can't pick four teams for you, but I believe there will be some upsets. This year probably is the most parity we've had in the women's game.

ASR: What do you think of Rutgers placement. Can they go all the way???

Meyers: I think all the regions are tough regions. In the past we have said that, "well that region is a little easier." This year I don't think you can say that. With Rutgers hosting, they've got as good a chance as anybody in that region, but I also feel they have a difficult road. I think having to play St. Joe's or Texas will be tough for them. They have to fly out to Portland, which then they will have to go up against either Oregon-UAB or Miss. St.-St. Peters. Mississippi State has been playing strong, Oregon could cause a lot of problems for Rutgers with their size. I think Rutgers has got to continue to play well, but it's going to be tough.

JHW: What do you think is the best first round game?? Thanks.

Meyers: I think Michigan-Stanford will be a good game. I think Kansas-Vandy will be a good game. Boston College-Nebraska, I kind of look at that one also.

Michael: Is La. Tech really deserving of that No. 1, considering the squeaker at Western Kentucky? That team has not exactly been a powerhouse recently.

Meyers: They have never fallen out of the top four. If Penn State had won the Big Ten, you would have won the argument of putting them at the top speed. But La. Tech, their pre-season schedule and their RPI still put them in that spot, the No. 1 spot.

Jen: What do you think of Tennessee's chances and the possible UConn/Tennessee matchup?

Meyers: I think both teams will have a tough time getting out. You have Duke that's playing well, Purdue's the defending national champion, and then LSU. I think the top four teams in each region is very, very difficult. Connecticut should get out of the East, but there's no guarantee. I think Tennessee and Notre Dame will matchup. If it's a rematch, and it's in Philadelphia, I would give the advantage to Connecticut (against Tennessee).

Jason: Nobody seems to be giving UC-Santa Barbara their proper due. How far do you think they can go in the tourney?

Meyers: Of course not, they are on the West Coast. I think Mark French likes it that way. His team will surprise a lot of people.

Jerry: Do you think that Maine has a chance to upset North Carolina?

Meyers: Anything is possible, and with the seeds being so close, they have as good a chance as anybody. North Carolina is playing very well at the end of the season. Nikki Teasley is healthy, and the Tar Heels are at full strength.

Roachstar: Don't you think all the Pac-10 teams are seeded kind of low? What's up with that?

Meyers: UCLA struggled this year, and I think being on the West Coast people talk so much about the parity in the game, well, there's parity in the Pac-10. The low seeds reflect that sometimes. The rest of the country doesn't give the West Coast more of a look than it should.

RS: Are you surprised that Pepperdine made it into the field of 64?

Meyers: Pleasantly surprised. Coach Trake has really turned that program around, and brought it some notoriety, so I am not real surprised. I think they deserve to be in as much as anybody else. It's nice to see that many West Coast teams in the tournament.

Nancy: Which team(s) do you think have gotten more hype than they deserve?

Meyers: That's an interesting question. If there is any, because of the parity in the game this year, Connecticut and Tennessee have been up there. Maybe some teams such as Purdue haven't gotten as much credit. They are the defending champs. People have been talking about Penn State. Any of the teams that have gotten any recognition have all deserved it.

Renee: What about Mississippi State? A fluke keeps them from hosting and now they have to go all the way to Oregon. That doesn't seem right. But even with that said, can they make to the Sweet 16?

Meyers: I think Miss. State has got a great chance of making it to the Sweet 16, and even going further. If Arizona would have been able to host, they also would have had a conflict. You know what, it might play to an advantage for Mississippi State to go to Oregon. They will be the one team to have adjusted time-wise if they win and advance to Portland. If they can win in Eugene, they will stay on the West Coast and go to Portland. I think that's an advantage for them.
