Duke junior and ACC Player of the Year Georgie Schweitzer recently stopped by to chat with ESPN.com users about her team's ACC title run and the upcoming NCAA Tournament.
Schweitzer started all 31 games for the Blue Devils this season en route to their first-ever ACC tournament title. She also helped lead the Blue Devils to the 1999 NCAA title game. After suffering a divot fracture in her right fibia this season, she is ready to get back to the Big Dance where she says it's anyone's game. "I think UConn is one of the stronger teams out there," says Schweitzer. Other than that, it is pretty much wide open for whoever plays well." Schweitzer also chatted about teammate Missy West and what she needs to improve on to help Duke in the tournament. In case you missed Schweitzer's March 9 chat, the following is an edited transcript. Alan: Congratulations Georgia on being ACC Player of the Year and Duke as ACC Tournament Champs. I've been watching you play at Duke for three years now and am continually amazed how you play so many games in pain. Who or what instilled you with mental toughness? See you in the NCAA's next week! Georgia Schweitzer: I'm not really in that much pain. It gets exaggerated alot. I would have to say I have two older brothers and they were really tough on me when I was younger. If I cried, I couldn't play with them anymore. I learned to just suck it up when I was pretty young. James Arnold: Georgia, After the season is over will you need surgery on your leg injury? Do you have hopes to try out for the WNBA? Schweitzer: I'm just going to need some time off to let the bone heal. I'm not sure about the WNBA yet. I have medical school planned so I'm not sure how it's all going to fit together yet. VanGorp fan: What kind of seed do you think the Blue Devils will receive come Sunday? Schweitzer: First, hi Michelle! Definately we hope to play at home. We'll be happy with a 2 or 3 seed, either way. Zach: How is Peppi Browne doing? Has she had surgery yet? Was it tough for you to see her go down with her injury?? Schweitzer: We're not sure. She is in Indianapolis right now. I don't know if she's had the surgery or not yet. She is such a great player and has done so much for us. It was definately hard to see her go down. WestCoastHusky: What do you plan to do between now and Selection Sunday, when the brackets are announced, as far as getting away from the game and trying to relax? Schweitzer: Actually we have two days off and me and some teammates are heading to the beach. We're leaving as soon as this chat is over! We're going out to a nice dinner and plan on just laying out on the beach. Bickley Family: Congratulations on your newest award. We have watched you at St. Matthew, Bishop Hartley and now Duke. You have made the whole Columbus area very proud of you. Hope you make it to the finals again. Best of Luck, The Bickley Family. Schweitzer: Thank you for all the continued support. And Hi Ryan and Erin! Purdon't: Congrats on another great season. What training regimen did you follow during the offseason, and what parts of your game did work the hardest at improving? Schweitzer: This past season I was in rehab for my shoulder. Mostly I just try and get in really great shape. I try to play as much as possible, against guys. Katie: Do you have any funny stories to tell on Coach G?! What is she like off the court? Do you see that side of her much? Schweitzer: She is definately a great person all around. Off the court she can be alot of fun. She likes to joke around with us alot. She is just a great person. Bobo: Not counting Duke, who are your picks for the Final Four in Philly?? Good luck to you and your team. Schweitzer: I think UConn is one of the stronger teams out there. Other than that, it is pretty much wide open for whoever plays well. Joel from New York: Hi Georgia! My daughter will be attending Duke this fall. We love Duke men's and women's basketball. Besides basketball, how was your time at Duke spent? Any advice for new freshman? Good Luck in the tournament! Schweitzer: I spent alot of time studying. I have a good group of non-basketball friends. There are some good club-type places around here but I keep pretty busy with basketball. Craig: How do you feel that the students treat you as part of such a storied history of basketball at Duke? Do you think that you receive a better welcoming from the students since the men have such a traditional value to their team, and does this rub off on the women's program as well? Schweitzer: The student body is great here supporting us. Walking around campus after the games people are always telling me good game. Having a strong men's team helps. People around here just love basketball in general. Go Devils: Hey Georgia. How important will the play of Missy West be for you guys to advance in the Tournament? She seems like she's been coming on as of late. Schweitzer: Missy has been playing great lately. We depend on her for leadership because we have such a young team. She is going to have to play a huge role for us to be successful. Wayne: Hi Georgia, Congatulations on your ACC tournament victory. What do you feel you have to work on the most to achieve the great all around game that you have? Good luck in the NCAA tournament. Schweitzer: I think I need to work more on being in control of the tempo. I try to push the ball a little to much when we should be slowing things up and setting up the offense. Jacob from Tri-County: Congratulations on a great year!! You did awesome! How well do you think you'll do in the tournament? Schweitzer: I hope we come home with an NCAA Championship! Rick in Durham: Do you feel that you can play on the WNBA level now? And would you consider leaving early? Schweitzer: No. I would never think about leaving early. Buckeyes: I remember in grade school how you wanted to go to U of T real bad, however they did not recruit you and went after Semeka Randall instead. In the tourney last year did you feel like you had to prove yourself even more by trying to beat the school where you aleays wanted to go? Schweitzer: By the time I got to high school that wasn't a dream of mine anymore. It never was something I desperately wanted to do. I didn't feel last year like I was trying to prove myself. I love Duke and I am very happy here. Dukealum: With both the women's and men's teams having so much success after losing great players and leaders, what do you think that says about the programs, the coaches, and the remaining players? Schweitzer: It speaks volumes to the program but mostly to the coaches. They are the ones that have to make us believe in ourselves. I can't think of anybody as far as coaches that have made me feel so confident in myself. Adam: How does it feel to play in front of thousands of people and on national TV? Schweitzer: I think my freshman year it made me nervous but now I hardly even think about it. I just go out and concentrate on the game. trent: Hi Georgia. What a year, ACC Tournament champs and MVP. Do you think you have the ability to win the tournament? Schweitzer: Yes I think we do. Obviously it's going to take alot of hard work but you also have to have alot of luck on your side. But I think we can do it. COACH TOOPES: Go Mustangs!!! Big "G" We're proud of you in C Bus. Good luck in the tournament. Bring home some hardware!!! From Coach Toopes and the St. Matthew family. Schweitzer: Thank you for all the support! I will always be a Mustang! I hope you get to watch some of the games in the tournament.
Schweitzer: Thanks for all the great questions everyone! I hope everyone is cheering for the Devils in the
NCAA Tournament! |
