CART champ crashes during Miami testing

Defending CART champion Gil de Ferran was involved in a crash during testing at Homestead-Miami Speedway on Wednesday. His car hit a wall and received extensive damage but de Ferran escaped serious injury.

De Ferran was taken to Health South Doctor's Hospital in Miami where precautionary X-rays on his left foot were negative.

His Honda Reynard spun out in Turn 3 before hitting the Turn 4 wall at the 1.5-mile oval track.

De Ferran, a Brazilian who drives for Marlboro Team Penske, won his first career CART title in 2000. In the closest championship race in CART history, de Ferran finished with 168 points -- just eight ahead of Adrian Fernandez -- to win the $1 million Vanderbilt Cup as season champion.
