Champ runs well on new tire

KYALAMI, South Africa -- World superbike champion Colin Edwards was fastest on the first day of official preseason testing on Monday.

The Honda rider lapped in one minute 42.693 seconds, equaling his best time at last season's Kyalami round, while testing a new qualifying tire.

Australian Troy Bayliss was second fastest in 1:43.159 on a works Ducati.

Edwards said at the weekend that he did not expect to test the 2001 specification Honda VTR until an outing in Valencia, Spain, next month.

"I'm feeling confident. I don't feel any pressure, I've achieved what I set out to do. Now I just want to keep winning," the American said of the season which starts in Valencia on March 11.

"My next goal is to win more and try to beat what I achieved last year...I've thought about setting myself targets of 15 race wins or 10 race wins in a year," he said.

"But then I only end up looking at the calendar halfway through the year -- as I'm running out of races -- and I start putting pressure on myself," added Edwards who won eight races last season.
